Congratulations to the winners!
Now the real work begins. On November 14th, everyone gets sworn in. On the 15th is the first meeting of the new Board of Directors.
Many grand statements were made on the campaign trail to get us to this point. With the elections over, it's time to start delivering on those promises that got everyone elected. That is the job of all our elected union officials.
Our job, as the union, is to increase our vigilance of our own internal people. We must hold them accountable for their actions. No matter which side you were on, I don't think that anyone really wants another distraction like Naughty Joe during this round of contract bargaining. We're going to be in for a fight given the current economic situation. Unfortunately, that means we have to keep an eye on both the bargaining, and our elected officials.
If you have the chance, please welcome the people we have elected. Then remind them that we're watching. Remove the temptation to do something questionable just because no one will notice. If we can do that, we'll strengthen SEIU Local 503 and strengthen ourselves.
