Could anyone here explain the push to end 503's non-profit status?

I've heard the BOD has been encouraged to make 503's non-profit status end quietly by removing the feeding tube (not paying for renewal.)
Has anyone really performed a written, detailed analysis of the risks and rewards of such a move?
Any input?

Celebrity deathmatch...Stern vs. Roselli ... LEGAL ACTION?

As one who used to be on Roselli's list, I've received tons of "information" from Sal and the old guard at UHW. DVD's, letters, news clippings, etc. I'm very loyal to our union, but to me, loyalty involves always being vigilent to help keep our union on the right track. So I have listened to Sal and his supporters. I've written back and forth. I really tried to talk those folks into staying within our ranks when they formed NUHW. We can tolerate dissent and we should always embrace constructive reform.  read more »

Is SEIU in need of reform?

Absolutely. 503 is one of the better locals in SEIU, but I see reform as an ongoing process, something that must never end. The news doesn't get better. There's only one person that can keep your union on track. You. That is you, if you are a member. Staff cannot do it. They have a job description. Keeping the union on track is not part of it. Our elected leaders cannot do it. We are supposed to be a bottom up organization. That means that you are directing them. So, the responsibility for keeping our union on the straight and narrow is yours... and mine.  read more »

Why are we downplaying the DAS Bargaining Conference? Yes, it's been 8 months of bargaining. Yes, it was very tough. So again I ask, why are we downplaying this very important next step in finalizing a contract for State agency workers?

There was a lot more hoopla last contract. I wasn't nearly as involved then, but I still remember hearing about the bargaining conference. I remember that I could have gone if I so chose.  read more »

Hell Freezes Over!

May 16, 2009

On Saturday, May 16th, 2009, Hell officially froze over! While sitting in the Board of Directors meeting, it was rather warm in the afternoon. Towards the end, a potentially serious topic came up. After a presentation by one of the staff lawyers, the discussion started. After only a couple of minutes, the Chair recognized Immediate Past President Joe DiNicola.

And that's when it happened!

I agreed with Joe!  read more »
